I’ll Have What He’s Having

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”

As my husband and I took a leisurely drive to the Jersey Shore, I looked forward to a relaxing dat. We both love the beach and being near the water is calming. But on this trip, I found myself being very uncharacteristically jealous.

I looked at all the summer renters and their million dollar vacation homes. I looked at the cars they drove. I saw the carefree way they all headed to the beach with their chairs, coolers and fashionable bathing suits. And it got me upset. Why?

Because I want some of that.

I don’t need to be rich – I just want to experience that kind of freedom just once in my life. Once, couldn’t I be able to rent a house even for a couple of days and enjoy?  Can’t I be walking to the beach and everyone could be looking at me?

Just once, Lord? I am not asking for much.

But, as I thought about my selfish desires, I also thought about those people with means. What do I really know about them? Is this money spent on a summer at the shore a luxury or are they scrimping and saving for years to be able to afford this?  Do they have the problems I have or do they have it worse? Are they stuck-up tourists or have their families passed down these houses from generation to generation?

God has provided much to me. I don’t need to look anywhere else. No matter what my problems are, God has blessed me in many ways. No, I am not financially rich, but God through His Son has given me all the riches I need.

So, the next time I get jealous, I will try to appreciate all that I do have and be glad for all who can do more. Jealousy on my part will not get me any more material things or experiences.  I will experience what God has allowed for my life.

That is all I will ever need.
