On the Outside Looking In

1 Samuel

Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.

I have done this. You have too. We have all done this.

We look at someone’s outward appearance and automatically judge what kind of person they are. If someone has dirty clothes, we assume they are poor.  If someone has unusual hair, we assume they are weird. If someone is overweight, we assume they don’t take care of themselves.

Why do we do this when God does not?

We see people from the outward appearance but God sees us all from within. He knows us because He created us. He also knows that we are flawed people who sometimes make unjust accusations.

We all need to get past the outward appearance of others and into their heart. The person with dirty clothes may not even realize that there are stains on their clothes. The person with what we would consider unusual hair might be expressing a cultural or even religious belief. The overweight person may have medical issues that cause this condition and are trying each day to be more healthy.

When you even look at what appears to be a happy person, can you see inside what they are going through? Even the “happiest” person may be dealing with overwhelming sadness and personal issues. So, what should we be doing?

We should be treating others as we would want to be treated no matter what the outer appearance tells us.

That is what God does.  He deals with our hearts, not our physical bodies. Let us all deal with others from our hearts and try to be more compassionate and less judgmental. After all, even Pope Francis said ” Who I am to judge?”
