Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.
How many people walk around and appear to be a loving, giving person but have an ulterior motive? And how many times has that person been you? I know in my own case, there have been times when I have acted that way. I think we all have acted in this manner as flawed, prideful human beings.
In this passage, Jesus is telling the people that you need to be clean inside and out in order to live the righteous life. You need to be true to yourself before you can be true to others. Don’t be a hypocrite but live a truthful existence. Don’t let the material things of this world, including pride of self, dominate your actions.
You can’t give to others what you don’t have. Get right with yourself and with God – be the same inside and out.
