Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; andyour Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
How many times have we done something for someone and wanted to let everyone know it was us who performed the good deed? I am guilty of this myself. Yet, in the passage above, Jesus is telling us to perform our good deeds in silence. Why should we do that? Don’t we all want the credit for doing something right?
The only one who needs to know if we are doing something right is God. And of course, He already knows even before we do anything. It is good for our enormous egos to be recognized by others. But, if we get too full of ourselves, that can lead to false pride. Pride can be a dangerous thing if it goes too far.
Jesus is calling us to be there for others in need but not to boast about it. We should be charitable because it’s the right thing to do, not for the pat on the back we may get from others. We should feel good inside because we know that we are pleasing God.
Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do for me
If we are silent when we do our good works, God will come into our hearts. It is in the silence that He speaks the loudest. And He will reward those who do good works without recognition, God will give us all the recognition we deserve when we are with Him in Paradise
